The federal government has vowed to swiftly rescue 25 schoolgirls abducted from Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
Information Minister Mohammed Idris, in a statement on Monday, condemned the “reprehensible attack on innocent students and the killing of school officials who were carrying out their noble duty.”
Police said the terrorists, locally referred to as bandits, struck the school around 4 a.m., killing one staff member and abducting 25 students.
“Our security and intelligence agencies have been issued clear directives to locate, rescue, and safely return the students, and to ensure that the perpetrators face justice,” Idris said.
“The Federal Government will not relent until this objective is achieved.”
Idris added that the government shared in the pain of the victims’ families and was committed to bringing the girls home safely.
He also cited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s assurance that the protection of Nigerians, particularly schoolchildren, remains a top priority.
The statement further outlined steps to strengthen national security, including recalibrating military, policing, and intelligence capabilities and enhancing cooperation with regional partners through ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) to secure borders and dismantle criminal networks.
The northwest and parts of the north-central regions have faced a surge in banditry, with hundreds of people killed or kidnapped. The violence has forced the closure of many schools, as terrorist groups increasingly target children for ransom.
States most affected include Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Niger. In a similar incident in June 2021, 11 students were abducted from Federal Government College, Yauri, Kebbi State, by the notorious terror kingpin Dogo Gide, who released the victims after ransom negotiations.
No group has claimed responsibility for Monday’s attack. However, authorities continue to intensify efforts to rescue the girls and bring the perpetrators to justice
