No fewer than 30 persons were on Monday convicted by a magistrates’ court in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, for violating the state’s environmental sanitation law during the May edition of the monthly clean-up exercise.
The offenders, who were arrested at various locations across the state capital during the sanitation hours, were sentenced to one month of community service each, with an option of fine.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mrs. Tosin Aluko-Ajisafe, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, warning that the state government would no longer condone disregard for environmental laws.
“The Biodun Oyebanji administration is committed to ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all residents. Cleanliness is a shared responsibility, and everyone must play their part,” Aluko-Ajisafe stated.
She urged residents to embrace the culture of regular sanitation, adding that the monthly exercise was aimed at improving public health and environmental standards across the state.
Aluko-Ajisafe also sounded a note of warning to religious organisations operating within markets and commercial areas against providing cover for individuals trying to evade the clean-up.
“There is a growing trend of some worship centres, particularly those situated in markets and commercial areas, shielding individuals from participating in the mandatory sanitation exercise,” she said.
The commissioner warned that the government would not hesitate to clamp down on any religious body found aiding non-compliance, stressing that such actions undermine the state’s sanitation goals.
