In a devastating turn of events, tragedy struck the Federal University of Gashua (FUGA) in Yobe State as a fire engulfed a female hostel, claiming the life of a 300-level student from the Geography Department, Shamsiya Murtala.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, also left three other students injured, though they have since been treated and discharged from the general hospital in Gashua.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire erupted in Shamsiya’s room while she was asleep, necessitating the urgent intervention of fellow students to rescue her from the blazing inferno.
Despite their valiant efforts, Shamsiya succumbed to the flames, sending shockwaves through the university community.
Expressing deep sadness and extending heartfelt sympathies, the Vice-Chancellor of FUGA, Professor Maimuna Waziri, addressed the grievous loss suffered by the affected students and their families.
In a statement, Professor Waziri pledged a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire, emphasizing the university’s commitment to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
However, amidst the sorrow and mourning, concerns over escalating unrest among students on campus prompted a decisive response from the Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Waziri swiftly ordered the immediate closure of the university, citing the need to restore calm and ensure the safety of all students and staff members.
This directive, communicated through a statement signed by the University’s Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Mamuda, mandates the evacuation of all students from the campus until further notice.
The abrupt halt to academic activities underscores the severity of the situation and the urgency with which authorities are addressing the prevailing unrest.
