Tension is brewing in Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State after hundreds of flood victims alleged that the state government distributed expired food items as part of its relief effort.
No fewer than 4,000 households were beneficiaries of the distribution exercise supervised on Sunday by Deputy Governor Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, who also chairs the Relief and Post-Recovery Committee.
However, some recipients accused the government of endangering their health, claiming that over 70 per cent of the food items — including rice, maize, spaghetti and sugar — had passed their expiry dates.
A resident of Modire community, one of the worst-hit areas, Mr. Yakubu Musa, alleged that the distribution was a “show of shame” and insisted that many of the food items were unsafe for human consumption.
“I can tell you that 70 per cent of the food items distributed to us have expired. The only good ones are the fabrics, cooking oil, mats and salt. We are ready to return the bad items to the government as proof,” Musa told PLATFORM TIMES.
He called on Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to set up an independent panel to investigate the alleged scandal, warning that it could erode public trust in government interventions.
Reacting, the Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Mrs. Celine La’ori, dismissed the allegations as “politically motivated mischief,” insisting that all items distributed met safety standards.
“As far as we are concerned, the items we shared have no problems. It’s possible the allegations are coming from opposition quarters,” La’ori said in a phone interview.
Governor Fintiri’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, in a separate statement, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to fairness, transparency and diligence in handling disaster relief.
