The Nigerian military says it has killed 438 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in the last seven months amid intensified operations in Borno State.
Maj. Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of the Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), disclosed this on Saturday in Maiduguri, stating that the figures cover counter-terrorism operations conducted between May and December 2025.
According to Abubakar, troops also recovered 254 assorted weapons and seized 300 Starlink communication devices from insurgents. In addition, 366 civilians were rescued from territories previously controlled by the militants.
“The surrender of 881 JAS/ISWAP fighters and their families, among other accomplishments, further underscores the progress we have made,” Abubakar said, adding that the military is committed to sustaining the ongoing offensives.
The commander credited the successes to directives and support from the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, which he said had significantly boosted field operations.
Despite these claims, large parts of the North-East remain volatile. Residents continue to report attacks on highways and rural communities, highlighting the persistent threat posed by the insurgents.
Access to frontline areas remains restricted, making independent verification of military reports challenging.
Abubakar, however, reassured Nigerians that troops would “maintain the tempo” of operations until terrorism in the region is dismantled.
The military’s disclosure comes as the federal government continues to intensify efforts to neutralize Boko Haram and ISWAP cells ahead of the next farming season, a critical period for the mostly agrarian communities in the North-East.
