As Nigeria marks the 49th anniversary of the assassination of former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, the Murtala Muhammed Foundation says it plans to institutionalize an anti-corruption campaign in honour of the late head of state .
PLATFORM TIMES reports that late Muritak Muhammed was killed at the aged of 37, along with his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, in his black Mercedes Benz saloon car on 13 February 1976.
Remembering him this year, MMF called for national reflection and rededication to his ideals of integrity, patriotism, and progress.
In a statement on Wednesday, MMF’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, urged Nigerians and the global community to honour the late leader’s legacy by embracing values that promote good governance and national development.
Muhammed-Oyebide said “as the nation marks the 49th anniversary of his assassination, this period of contemplation will serve as a prelude to a grand and meaningful commemoration of his legacy in 2025-2026.”
To mark the 50th anniversary in 2026, the foundation announced a series of landmark initiatives, including the unveiling of the Murtala Muhammed Centre for Governance and Entrepreneurship in Abuja.
She said the center aims to promote ethical leadership and self-reliance, equipping future leaders with skills to drive positive change.
She stated that the initiative will promote transparency and accountability, reinforcing principles that reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape during his tenure.
The foundation also revealed plans to launch the Murtala Social Index, a pioneering tool to measure social progress across Africa, ensuring data-driven policies for impactful development.
A healthcare initiative targeting underserved populations is also in the works, aligning with the late General’s vision of an equitable society.
According to her, in preserving his legacy, the Ikoyi Memorial Cenotaph, erected at the site of his assassination, will be refurbished, while monuments bearing his name will be upgraded to reflect their historical significance.
She said the foundation will also recognize young Nigerians and Africans named after General Muhammed, symbolizing the lasting impact of his leadership.
Reflecting on her father’s contributions, Muhammed-Oyebode said, “fifty years on, my father’s legacy remains a beacon of hope, justice, and progress.
“As we embark on this historic commemoration, we call on citizens, leaders, and global partners to ensure that his ideals of good governance, anti-corruption, and social equity continue to shape Nigeria and Africa’s future.”
She encouraged public participation in nationwide and global events celebrating the legacy of General Murtala Muhammed, reaffirming MMF’s commitment to leadership, governance, and humanitarian development.
