Amnesty International on Monday said the death toll from the recent violent attacks in Plateau State has risen to 54, with hundreds of residents displaced and living in fear.

The global human rights organisation disclosed that the latest assault occurred in Kimakpa village, Miango district of Bassa Local Government Area, where over 25 persons were killed on Monday.

In a statement, Amnesty condemned the spate of violence in the state and criticised the Nigerian government for failing to protect residents from repeated attacks by armed groups.

“The death toll after the gunmen’s attack on Zikke is now 54, as more dead bodies are being discovered in the bush,” Amnesty said, adding that a mass burial is being planned while search for missing persons continues.

It described the situation as dire, stating that people in the area are constantly bracing for further attacks.

According to Amnesty, 1,336 people have been killed and 29,554 others displaced in Plateau State between December 2023 and February 2024 alone.

The organisation called for an urgent and thorough investigation into the killings, saying security strategies under the administration of President Bola Tinubu have so far failed to curb the violence.

The latest killings come just days after a similar coordinated attack on five communities in Bokkos and Mangu LGAs, which left dozens dead and several houses razed.
