A 74-year-old former chaplain, prof. Yusufu Obaje and a 39-year-old pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Olive, Sanni Abimbola have been arrested for allegedly obtaining the sum of N34m under false pretence.
Obaje and Abimbola were arrested by operatives of the Police Special Fraud Unit, PSFU, Ikoyi, Lagos and charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island .
The defendants allegedly connived and obtained the money from the Complainant, Mr Adetunji Teluwo with the promise to use the money to transact oil and gas business for him to make a profit.
Police told the court that the defendants failed to transact the business, and instead converted the money to their use.
They were charged before the court on a two-count charge bordering on obtaining money under false pretence and fraud.
Prosecution counsel, Henry Obiazi told the court that the defendants committed the offence in March 2020 in Lagos.
Obiazi informed the court that the defendants with the intent to defraud collected the sum of N34m from the complainant with the promise to help him use the money to transact oil and gas business for him to make profit.
He said after the defendants collected the money from the complainant, they instead converted the money to their use and failed to fulfil the promise.
Obiazi said the offences, the defendants committed were punishable under Sections 411 and 314 (3) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and the Magistrate, O. S. Abioye granted them bail and adjourned the case till 5 September 2023 for the continuation of trial.
