The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party has distanced itself from purported guidelines and a timetable for the Edo governorship primaries led by the Lamidi Apapa faction.
In a press release, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Comrade Sam Uroupa, clarified that Abayomi Arabambi is not a member or official of the Labour Party, rendering his statements invalid.
The disclaimer follows a viral video showing Anslem Eragbe, the purported National Youth Leader of the Apapa faction, and associates being violently beaten by irate party supporters in Benin, Edo State.
The Apapa faction agents had reportedly arrived to prepare for the governorship primary.
Uroupa emphasized, “The Edo State chapter of Labour Party wishes to state that the national secretariat of the Labour Party has not released guidelines for the nomination of the party’s candidate for the Edo State 2024 governorship election.”
He asserted that Dr Abayomi Arabambi lacks the authority to formulate guidelines for the Edo State Labour Party gubernatorial primaries.
The statement urged party aspirants, members, and the public to disregard the purported guidelines, assuring that the official guidelines and timetable would be communicated by the national secretariat.
Uroupa concluded, “We appeal to all the Labour Party governorship aspirants in Edo State, all party members, our teeming supporters in Edo State, and the general public to disregard the guidelines and timetable for the Edo State governorship election as issued by Dr Abayomi Arabambi
