The National Examinations Council, NECO, has revealed that only 76 out of 69,829 registered students have emerged as the top scorers in the 2023 National Common Entrance Examination, NCE.
The examination body said the pupils obtained a remarkable score of 203, while six pupils record the lowest score of 01 mark .
This was revealed on Wednesday, when the NECO Registrar, Ibrahim Wushishi, tendered the results to the Federal Ministry of Education.
The Permanent Secretary, David Adejo, who received the results on behalf of the Ministry therefore expressed his appreciation as he praised the NECO for successfully organising the examination.
According to Adejo, Lagos State recorded the highest number of registered pupils, with an impressive figure of 18,644 students.
While Taraba State on the other end had the lowest number of registered pupils, with only 102 students showing interest in the examination.
He also highlighted that Out of the 72,865 pupils who initially registered, 69,829 students, comprising 38,801 females and 34,064 males, actively took part in the examination.
He therefore commended the examination board for the increased participation of female students.
He said, “A total of 72,865 pupils registered compared to 71,738 for 2022 with Lagos State having the highest number of 18,644 and Taraba with the lowest of 102.
“With 38,801 female registrants against 34,064 males, we are making progress with bridging the gender parity. 69,829 pupils sat for the examination, 3,036 pupils were absent, 76 pupils had the highest score of 203. The lowest score was 01 mark and this was scored by six pupils.”
He further explained that the admission criteria for selection of qualified candidates into Federal Unity Colleges remained the same as 60% Merit; 30% Equality of State and 10% Exigency.
He also assured stakeholders that the Federal Ministry of Education would oversee the admission process, ensuring its timely and fair implementation in accordance with the specified criteria.
