In a shocking turn of events, Oba Kolawole Sowemimo, the Olu of Owode-Egba in Ogun State, is under intense scrutiny after a video surfaced showing him openly abusing the country’s currency during his wife’s 60th birthday celebration.
The one minute and thirty seconds clip quickly went viral, sparking outrage among Nigerians.
The monarch, who presides over residents grappling with various diseases, including cholera, was captured spraying naira notes at the extravagant event.
This action has not only drawn criticism but has also led to calls for accountability from the public.
One concerned protester expressed dismay, stating, “This is Oba Sowemimi doing this to our Naira in the name of displaying wealth.
“Now we blame yahoo boys for doing rituals and showing off at clubs and bars. Who do we report to if our traditional rulers can be doing this? When many under his domain are homeless and hungry. What a society.”
The video has prompted widespread demands for both Oba Sowemimo and the Fuji maestro, K1 de Ultimate, Wasiu Ayinde, who benefitted from the naira abuse, to issue public apologies for their actions.
The Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) regulations on the abuse of the national currency are clear, and violations come with significant consequences.
PLATFORM TIMES investigation revealed that the CBN Act recommends sanctions for the abuser of the Naira, stating, “For the avoidance of doubt, spraying of, dancing, or matching on the Naira during social occasions shall constitute an abuse and defacing of the Naira and shall be punishable.”
The CBN had recently warned against spraying naira at parties, emphasizing the possibility of facing six months in jail or a N50,000 fine.
The bank announced the deployment of mobile courts nationwide to apprehend and prosecute offenders, with law enforcement agencies actively monitoring and enforcing these regulations.
