The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as ‘Shiites’, has launched a scathing indictment against Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and the state police commissioner, Mr. Ali Audu Dabigi.
The group alleged that the duo were involved in the extra-judicial killing of seven members of the movement.
In a series of petitions addressed to key government officials, including the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu , Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), the Shi’ites demanded justice and accountability for the tragic incident.
The petitions, dated April 23, 2024, and signed by the Chairman of the Resource Forum of Islamic Movement, Prof. Abdullahi Danladi, accuse Governor Uba Sani and Commissioner of Police Ali Audu Dabigi of ordering the violent crackdown on peaceful protesters during a pro-Palestinian demonstration on April 5, 2024, in Kaduna and Zaria.
In the letters titled “Petition Against Mr. Uba Sani, the Governor of Kaduna State and the Commissioner of Police, Kaduna for Arbitrary Extra-Judicial Killing of Seven and Wounding Over 30 Peaceful Protesters on 5th of April, 2024 in Kaduna and Zaria,” the Shi’ites detail the events leading up to the deadly confrontation.
They highlight the global significance of the protests, which were part of the International Quds Day observed in more than 30 cities across Nigeria.
According to the petition, while similar demonstrations in other states remained peaceful, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police opted for a heavy-handed approach, ordering officers to open fire with live ammunition on unarmed protesters.
The ensuing violence resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives and left over 30 individuals wounded.
The Shi’ites condemn the actions of Governor Uba Sani and Commissioner Ali Audu Dabigi as arbitrary, unconstitutional, and in violation of citizens’ rights enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
They warn that failure to hold the perpetrators accountable will tarnish Nigeria’s image both domestically and internationally.
In their plea for justice, the Shi’ites call upon the recipients of the petitions to take decisive action against Governor Uba Sani and Commissioner Ali Audu Dabigi for their role in the breach of citizens’ constitutional rights.
They urge swift investigation and appropriate sanctions to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
