Ahead of Saturday’s Governorship election in Edo State, the Nigeria Police Force has trained no fewer than 500 officers and men in the state command.

DAILY POST reports that the officers were trained on the coverage and handling of the governorship election.

Speaking at the training, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo said the training was aimed at preparing the officers for the Saturday election.

The commissioner, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner Administration, Adepegba Adetoye, charged the officers to pay serious attention so that they could pass on whatever they learned at the training to other officers for a peaceful election.

Iwo, while commending the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for the training, said it would equip the officers with knowledge on election matters for a peaceful and credible election.

He, however, called on the officers to cooperate with the trainers, noting that “no knowledge is wasted and whatever they gathered at the training would be useful to them during the election.

Earlier, Chief Johnson Ateghie in charge of the GTA consulting firm handling the training, said the Inspector General of Police approved the training to up skills the human capacity of officers and men to be deployed for the election.

“The essence of this training is to ensure that officers are deployed to supervise the security of the election and other stakeholders play on the same page and ensure that there is no discrimination, intimidation and there is orderliness during the election so that the outcome of the election is acceptable to all players,” he said.

One of the trainers, CSP Bawa Sale, said the trainees would be taken through discipline and a code of conduct for police officers posted for election duties.

“This is to remind the officers of the code of conduct and those characteristics that are inherent in officers for day-to-day operation. It will enable them to maintain neutrality as well as the democratic right of the electorate”, he added.
