The Lagos State University (LASU) has emerged victorious at the inaugural edition of the PR Fest 2024 Pitch Competition, securing the coveted top spot in a hotly contested event that spotlighted the strategic prowess of Nigeria’s future public relations professionals.

Held on the opening day of PR Fest 2024, the competition saw two heavyweights of Nigerian tertiary institutions—LASU and Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech)—compete head-to-head in a test of creativity and communication expertise.

The challenge? To craft and present a comprehensive public relations strategy to position Lagos State as a leading global tourist destination by leveraging its cultural assets.

In what proved to be a thrilling display of innovative thinking and persuasive presentations, LASU’s team won the day with a highly creative and multi-dimensional pitch.

Their proposed strategy for elevating Lagos State’s international tourism appeal integrated cutting-edge digital storytelling, immersive cultural experiences, and strategic collaborations with local and global stakeholders.

This well-rounded approach earned LASU the highest marks from the panel of judges, propelling them to victory over their worthy rivals, Yabatech.

LASU’s winning team was praised for its compelling use of public relations tools to weave together a narrative that not only promoted Lagos as a cultural hub but also sought to transform the state’s image in the global tourism market.

The judges, impressed by the depth and execution of their plan, awarded LASU the winner’s trophy along with a cash prize of N100,000.

Yabatech, the runner-up, did not go unnoticed. Their team also delivered a strong presentation, which earned them a N50,000 prize and a trophy to acknowledge their commendable effort.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Comfort Obot Nwankwo, the Chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), hailed both teams for their creativity and strategic insight.

“This competition has truly demonstrated the power of public relations in shaping narratives and influencing perceptions.

LASU’s performance was exemplary, and we are excited to see the future of PR in the hands of such talented young professionals,” she said.

The judging panel featured two prominent figures in the Nigerian PR industry: Mr. Bolaji Abimbola, CEO of Indigo, and Mr. Bamiji Adeleye, CEO of Alderfort.

Both judges commended the students for their impressive ideas and highlighted the importance of strategic communication in driving cultural and tourism initiatives.

The PR Pitch Competition was a key highlight of PR Fest 2024, which is a weeklong celebration dedicated to promoting public relations, creativity, and culture.

This year’s event, held at the prestigious Muson Centre in Lagos, promises to be a landmark moment for Nigeria’s PR industry, with a host of activities lined up, including lectures, cultural tours, and networking opportunities.
