Former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United forward, Michael Owen has offered his thoughts on the referee’s decision to send off Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes’s card against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
DAILY POST reports that The Red Devils were beaten 3-0 by Sours at Old Trafford.
Brennan Johnson hit the target for Tottenham within the first few minutes and Spurs added two more goals in the second half through Dejan Kulusevski (47′) and Dominic Solanke (77′).
United captain, Bruno Fernandes was shown a straight red card towards the end of the first half.
The Portuguese made an attempt to win the ball from James Maddison, slipped and raised his boot against the Englishman’s shin.
Referee Chris Kavanagh decided to show him a straight red card.
And former Manchester United striker, Owen believes the Portugal International was rather unlucky to be sent off for the challenge.
He said on Premier League Productions, “I thought he was unlucky. I don’t think it was a red. I thought he slipped.
“I thought he did catch him slightly, but I didn’t think it was with any force. It was on the shin pad. He has tried to flick him and bring him down.
“But there is no force. It isn’t a dangerous challenge. He slips and just flicks his leg out. It doesn’t hurt. It flicks him on the shin pad. It isn’t even that high. A yellow card.”
