The Chairmanship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) for Abeokuta South Local Government, Chief Olalekan Alex Shoyinka, popularly known as Ayinla Egba, has strongly condemned the killing of Adeleke Adeyinka, a councillorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a statement issued on Sunday,  Ayinla Egba expressed profound sorrow and outrage over the tragic incident, which he described as a “barbaric act” that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Ogun State.

The killing of the APC candidate, which occurred in the state capital, has raised serious concerns about the safety of political participants ahead of the 2024 local government elections.

Ayinla Egba called on law enforcement agencies to swiftly conduct a thorough investigation into the killing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, ensuring that justice is served without delay.

“This brutal killing is not only a devastating blow to the victim’s family and political associates but also a dangerous signal for the political atmosphere in Ogun State,” Ayinla Egba lamented.

“I condemn this barbaric act in its entirety and call on the authorities to carry out a thorough and swift investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“I sympathize with the family of Adeleke Adeyinka and pray that God grants them comfort during this difficult time.”

The ADP leader also took the opportunity to urge Governor Dapo Abiodun to intensify efforts to protect the lives of Ogun State citizens, particularly the youths, who remain vulnerable in the current political climate.

He emphasized that political violence must not be allowed to fester, as it threatens the stability and security of the region.

Ayinla Egba further appealed for calm among residents and political stakeholders as the state gears up for its 2024 local government elections.

He called on the people of Abeokuta South Local Government to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities to prevent further violence.

“Political violence has no place in our state. We cannot afford to create a climate of fear for our youths and future leaders,” he said.

“It is crucial to note that while the upcoming elections remain competitive, they must be fair, moral, and legal. Ogun State deserves peaceful elections, free from the menace of intimidation and violence.”

As the election period approaches, Ayinla Egba stressed the need for political actors across all parties to work together to foster peace and unity in the state.

He reiterated the importance of creating a secure environment that encourages political participation, where citizens, especially young people, can engage in the democratic process without fear of retribution.

“The Ogun State government must prioritize the safety of residents, particularly those involved in politics and community development, regardless of political affiliation,” he added.

“Our youths are the future of this state, and we must protect them from becoming victims of senseless political violence.”

In his final remarks, Ayinla Egba extended his condolences to the family of the slain councillorship candidate, as well as the APC community, urging all political stakeholders to honor the memory of the deceased by working towards a more peaceful and inclusive political environment.

The Ogun State Police Command has yet to release further details on the ongoing investigation, but calls for heightened security measures have been echoed by other political leaders in the state.
