In a significant move aimed at improving the livelihood of civil servants, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the approval of a new minimum wage of N85,000 for workers in the state.
This development, which positions Lagos at the forefront of wage increases in Nigeria, was disclosed during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the decision was based on the state’s financial capacity and the cost of living in Lagos, rather than competing with other states.
“It is not a competition. I am not going to say that we are paying more than some people; it is a function of affordability and capacity,” the governor stated.
Recognizing the high cost of living in Lagos, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the need for an adequate living wage for civil servants.
He also hinted at further increases in the near future. “We also increased our salary earlier in the year.
“I will want to come back in January and say that I have been able to increase the minimum wage of Lagos to N100,000, not because I want to make anybody look bad, but because I want my people to have a living wage.”
This wage increase follows a trend in Lagos’ proactive approach to ensuring better working conditions for its civil service.
