The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed strong disapproval over the religious imbalance in the selection of candidates for chairmanship positions in the upcoming local government elections in Ogun State.
MURIC, through its Ogun State chapter, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of marginalizing the Muslim community by favoring Christian candidates.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 16, 2024, and signed by its chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Tajudeen Alao, MURIC revealed that out of the 20 candidates selected for the chairmanship elections, 16 are reportedly Christians, primarily affiliated with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), while only four are Muslims.
The group described this as a clear act of discrimination, pointing out that it undermines the principle of inclusivity and equity, particularly in a state with a significant Muslim population.
“We reject this glaring marginalization, which only reinforces the perception that Muslims in Ogun State are treated as second-class citizens,” Alhaji Alao said in the statement.
He further criticized Governor Dapo Abiodun for failing to address the concerns of the Muslim community despite previous appeals.
According to MURIC, this imbalance in representation is not limited to politics but extends to other sectors, including education, where Islamic Studies teachers are noticeably absent in government-run schools while Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) teachers are abundant.
MURIC called on Governor Abiodun and the APC leadership to rectify what they described as systemic discrimination.
The group warned that if the current trend continues, the Muslim community in Ogun State would withhold its support for political leaders who perpetuate such exclusionary practices.
“History will judge those who contribute to the marginalization of Muslims in this state. When the time comes for these political figures to seek higher office, they should expect no votes from the Muslim community,” the statement added.
The organization emphasized that Ogun State belongs to all its residents, irrespective of religious affiliation, and urged political leaders to foster an environment of fairness and respect for both Christians and Muslims.
MURIC also called on Muslim leaders to break their silence and actively join the fight for equal representation in the state.
“As a collective, we must denounce divisive and unjust practices.Together, let us work towards an Ogun State where every individual, regardless of faith, enjoys equal rights and opportunities,” Alhaji Alao urged.
The statement concluded with a call for unity among the Muslim community to ensure that their voices are heard in the ongoing struggle for justice and fairness.
