The Owu Kingdom in Abeokuta is in mourning following the death of Alhaja Aliratu Adunni Matemilola, the mother of HRM Oba Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom.
Alhaja Matemilola passed away at the age of 81 after a brief illness.
In a statement issued on behalf of the Owu people, Chief Dr. Abiodun Oladimeji Lasile, the Orunto of Owu Kingdom, expressed gratitude for Alhaja Matemilola’s life, calling her “a shining example of kindness, compassion, and strength.”
Known for her warmth and generosity, she touched many lives as a successful trader, loving mother, and devoted wife, maintaining a reputation for integrity and transparency.
Born in 1943 in Abiola Village, Alhaja Matemilola was the daughter of Chief Kasali Bolaji Abiola, the third Baale of Abiola Village, a settlement founded by her grandfather, Chief Abiola.
Her lineage is deeply rooted in Ogun State’s history, with connections to the Ẹgba United Forces’ historic victory over the Dahomey forces in the mid-1800s.
Her father held a prominent role in the region’s heritage, being a notable figure from the Ago-Ika area of Gbágùrá in Abeokuta.
Alhaja Matemilola is survived by several children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and an extended family.
The Owu community, alongside the Bolaji and Matemilola families, is joined in mourning, with tributes pouring in for the beloved matriarch, fondly referred to as the “Iya Oba.”
“We extend our deepest condolences to HRM Oba Prof. Saka Adelola Matemilola and the entire Bolaji and Matemilola families during this difficult time,” the statement read.
“May Allah grant Alhaja Matemilola’s soul eternal peace and admit her into Aljannah Firdaus.”
Funeral arrangements has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon .
