As the world marks Occupational Therapy Day, experts are urging the federal government to establish more medical rehabilitation centers across Nigeria to enhance the abilities of individuals with disabilities.
This call was made during a discussion on Sunday by a trio of specialists in the field, including Wahab Adisa, Akinboyowa Akinkunle, and Efunsanmi Temitayo.
Wahab Adisa emphasized the need for increased recruitment of occupational therapists within both federal and state government services.
He pointed out that these professionals play a crucial role in assisting individuals facing various medical challenges, including conditions like Down Syndrome and spinal cord injuries.
Adisa noted, “Occupational therapists work on different conditions, whether congenital or acquired, to help individuals of all ages and backgrounds become self-sufficient.”
Highlighting the significance of the day, Adisa stated, “World Occupational Therapy Day is a global event aimed at raising awareness about how individuals with health issues can become independent and manage daily activities.
We focus on helping individuals integrate into various day-to-day activities, and many tertiary institutions in the country have departments dedicated to this field.”
Akinboyowa Akinkunle echoed Adisa’s sentiments, calling for the recruitment of more occupational therapists in government tertiary and secondary health institutions.
This, he believes, is essential for enabling these professionals to perform their duties effectively and efficiently.
Additionally, Efunsanmi Temitayo advocated for the establishment of occupational therapy departments in more higher institutions throughout Nigeria.
She encouraged prospective students to consider studying this vital course and urged parents to utilize the services of occupational therapists for their special needs children.
This year’s theme for Occupational Therapy Day is “Occupational Therapy For All,” reflecting the commitment to inclusivity and support for individuals facing disabilities.
The experts concluded that with the right support and resources, individuals with disabilities can lead fulfilling lives and contribute meaningfully to society.
