Okupe: ‘Tinubu is The Right Leader For Nigeria’s Tough Reforms

’Former presidential aide Doyin Okupe has stated that Nigerians are being “unfair” in their criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, arguing that the president’s reforms are necessary to prevent Nigeria’s economic collapse.

Okupe, who served as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign in the 2023 elections, noted that while he previously supported Labour Party candidate Obi, he now believes the “better man” won.

He shared these insights after meeting Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday.

“Just 17 months, how much can he do?” Okupe questioned, urging Nigerians to give Tinubu’s administration more time to fully implement its policies.

“If we do not go through this tough time, the country would have collapsed,” he added, suggesting that the sacrifices are essential for stabilizing the economy.

Since Tinubu took office in May 2023, Nigerians have experienced unprecedented inflation and a surge in energy costs.

Key reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates, have sparked protests as citizens grapple with rising living costs.

Okupe, however, insists that these difficult measures are laying the groundwork for long-term economic recovery.

Referring to the opposition, Okupe dismissed suggestions that Labour Party’s Obi or the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar would have handled the situation better.

“None of the two other candidates can do what Tinubu is doing,” he said, defending the president’s bold policies and hinting that merely discussing solutions is different from the ability to execute them.
