Two renowned elder statesmen, Senator Femi Okurounmu and Professor Anthony Asiwaju, are poised to address the persisting crisis in Rivers State and the alleged desecration of Nigeria’s judiciary—a development they warn has the potential to unleash unprecedented unrest in the Niger Delta.

The pair will appear on the widely followed current affairs program, Boiling Point Arena, scheduled for Sunday, November 10, 2024.

The online monthly interview series, now in its 25th edition, will kick off at 8 p.m. via Zoom, broadcasting live on Sweet 107.1 FM, Abeokuta, and WASH 94.9 FM, Lagos.

Conceived by Dr. Ayo Arowojolu, a veteran media professional, Boiling Point Arena has gained a substantial online audience drawn by its focus on critical national issues.

In this edition, Okurounmu, a vocal figure and former chair of the Presidential Advisory Council, along with Asiwaju, an eminent historian specializing in African Borderland Studies, will delve into the threats to Nigeria’s democracy and the judiciary.

Their discussion, titled “The Unending Rivers Crises: How Powerful Individuals are Desecrating the Judiciary and Other Institutions of State Across the Country,” is expected to spotlight the escalating influence of godfatherism, money politics, governance by proxy, legislative misconduct, and alleged abuses of state security apparatus.

Senator Okurounmu, known for his advocacy within the Afenifere socio-political group, previously played a crucial role in the Constitutional Conference under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Prof. Asiwaju, an Emeritus Professor of History, retired from the University of Lagos and is widely respected for his insights into African socio-political dynamics.

Together, they are expected to bring a nuanced perspective to the unraveling governance structures in Nigeria.

The discussion will be heralded by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof. Saka Matemilola, who will deliver the keynote address.

As the chairman of the Boiling Point Council of Royals and Elders, Oba Matemilola’s participation shows  the significance of the discourse for Nigeria’s political stability.

Dr. Eddy Ademosu, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, lauded Sweet FM, led by Senator Olugbenga Obadara, and WASH FM for their partnership in broadcasting the program to a broader audience.

According to Ademosu, the program’s goal is to provide actionable insights to preserve Nigeria’s democracy, especially in a period marked by heightened political tensions and institutional challenges.

The Boiling Point platform comprises a distinguished network of over 300 professors, technocrats, industry leaders, High Court justices, traditional rulers, top security personnel, and media professionals.
