CDHR Calls For Withdrawal Of ‘Customer Friendly’ Award Given To FMC Idi-Aba, Demands Probe Of Selection Process

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has expressed shock and dismay over the recent award granted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Idi-Aba in Abeokuta, which was named “Best Customer Friendly and Environmentally Clean Hospital” by the Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate.

In a statement released on Friday, the CDHR condemned the award and demanded an immediate withdrawal, along with a probe into the selection process and potential conspirators involved.

According to a congratulatory letter dated November 12, 2024, Professor Pate praised the hospital’s Medical Director, Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, citing the facility’s “distinguished performance in providing effective healthcare services” as the basis for the accolade.

However, the CDHR has challenged the validity of this claim, alleging that the award misrepresents the reality faced by many patients and staff at FMC Idi-Aba.

The CDHR, represented by National Vice President Comrade ‘Yinka Folarin, argued that awarding the hospital for customer friendliness and environmental cleanliness is misleading, given what it describes as “numerous complaints of negligence, dereliction of duty, and an unfriendly work environment.”

These issues, the CDHR contends, are contrary to the hospital’s mission to deliver high-quality and timely clinical services.

“Patients and their relatives have suffered considerably at this facility, making it clear that it fails to uphold standards worthy of such an award,” said Folarin.

“We demand the immediate withdrawal of this manipulative award, as well as a comprehensive investigation into the award process and all individuals involved, including the Minister himself, who is suspected to be complicit in this act.”

The CDHR emphasized the need for transparency in healthcare accolades, particularly those recognizing patient experience and service standards.

The organization has urged relevant authorities to act swiftly, questioning whether there was manipulation in the selection process that led to the recognition of FMC Idi-Aba in such categories.

The CDHR’s statement has raised concerns about the credibility of the award and has called into question the integrity of the awarding body.

The committee has demanded that healthcare facilities are recognized solely based on their performance and the satisfaction of those they serve.
