Prominent stakeholders have called on the federal and state governments to invest in the indigenous textile and fabric industry, particularly Adire production, to foster economic growth and stability.
Former Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Najeem Awodele, made this appeal on Thursday during the 2nd National Adire Festival at the June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Awodele emphasized that strategic support for local clothing materials like Adire would not only boost export capacity but also significantly enhance Nigeria’s economic development.
“The Adire industry holds vast potential for empowering women and youths,” Awodele stated.
“Collaboration between business organizations, indigenous producers, and all levels of government is essential to unlock these opportunities.”
Themed ‘Empowering Youths and Women for Economic Viability’, the festival provided a platform for stakeholders to explore pathways for making the Adire fabric industry attractive and sustainable.
The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, represented by the Orunto of Owu, Chief Biodun Lashile, described the event as pivotal for charting the future of the sector.
“The festival serves as a rallying point for stakeholders to discuss economic strategies that can elevate the industry’s status both locally and globally,” Matemilola said.
Speakers, including Dr. Tunde Adegbola, Mr. Lasun Somoye, and Prof. Braide, urged the government to prioritize local content in production processes.
They noted that relying on imported materials undermines the sustainability of Adire production, calling for policies that promote locally sourced inputs.
In her welcome address, Dr. Ronke Adeboyejo, Executive Director of the Asani and Aduke Foundation, highlighted the festival’s relevance in empowering young Nigerians.
“The theme is a call to action to ensure the industry’s survival by actively involving youths and women in its value chain,” she said.
The event drew artisans, policymakers, and industry players committed to revitalizing Nigeria’s indigenous textile sector.
Attendees expressed optimism that government intervention would enhance the global appeal of Adire while preserving its cultural heritage.
