The Customs Area Controller, Ogun I Command, Comptroller James Ojo, has expressed concerns over the alarming rise in illicit drug smuggling, announcing the seizure of illicit drugs valued at ₦117,587,405.
Ojo disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing held at the Ogun II Area Command headquarters in Abeokuta.
The Controller stated that the seizures, made between January and November 21, 2024, include 403 sacks and 6,504 parcels of cannabis sativa, as well as 362 packs of Tramaking tablets (a brand of tramadol).
While lamenting the high rate of illicit drug trafficking in the state, Ojo cited operations carried out between October 13 and November 12, 2024. He explained that during this period, operatives intercepted 1,373 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 1,337 kg and 362 packs of Tramaking tablets abandoned at locations including Abeokuta, the Igankoto area of Yewa North Local Government, and Imeko Afon.
He described the operation as a significant milestone in combating drug trafficking and safeguarding public health. Ojo, however, handed the seized items over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
He said: “The implications of these seizures are profound. We disrupt the supply chain of illicit drugs, thereby mitigating the risks these substances pose to our youth, families, and communities.”
The successful seizures were attributed to robust intelligence operations, local informants, and collaboration with sister agencies.
Comptroller Ojo commended the synergy among stakeholders and emphasised the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to preventing smuggling activities. He also highlighted the role of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, in creating an enabling environment for effective operations.
“We remain resolute and uncompromising in our mission to thwart any attempt to smuggle prohibited items through our borders,” Ojo stated.
Receiving the seized items, the Commander of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Command, Olusegun Adeyeye, praised the Customs Service for its vigilance and collaboration.
“This achievement underscores the strong partnership between the NDLEA and the Nigeria Customs Service,” Adeyeye said.
He warned of the social and economic repercussions of drug trafficking, noting that drug abuse significantly contributes to criminal activities.
“The rate of criminality we witness today stems from drug abuse,” he explained. “These substances embolden individuals to commit heinous acts.”
Adeyeye also emphasised the NDLEA’s rehabilitative approach, noting the availability of centres across the country for sensitisation and education.
Comptroller Ojo reiterated the Customs Service’s commitment to strengthening operations, enhancing intelligence gathering, and collaborating with relevant agencies. He urged the public to support efforts to combat smuggling and promote a drug-free society.
“We will continue to prioritise the safety, security, and health of Nigerians,” Ojo concluded. “Together, we can build a safer and more secure nation.”
