The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported the destruction of 31 transmission towers by vandals in Okada and Ofosu communities of Edo State.

Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s Director of Public Affairs, disclosed in a statement on Friday that the attacks targeted the 330kV Benin-Egbin and Benin-Omotosho transmission lines, with critical components removed.

The damage, discovered earlier in November during a routine patrol by TCN linesmen, threatens power supply in the region.

“TCN engineers from the Benin Sub-Region have initiated repairs to prevent the collapse of the affected towers and to avoid disruption of bulk power supply,” Mbah said.

In a separate incident on November 19, vandals attacked the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132kV transmission line, stealing approximately one-third of the conductor and damaging towers 29 to 31.

This line, already under repair following a previous attack, had been nearing completion, with about 85 percent of the work done.

Mbah emphasized that such acts of vandalism significantly hinder the stability and expansion of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. She urged local communities and security agencies to remain vigilant and support TCN’s efforts to safeguard power installations.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to completing ongoing repairs and enhancing security measures to protect critical infrastructure, including deploying local security at vulnerable sites.
