A renowned brand manager and Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) ambassador, Michael Nwabufo, popularly known as Mike Premium, has called on the National Assembly to take a firm stance against Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) foods in Nigeria.
Speaking before the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Mr. Nwabufo raised concerns about the health and environmental risks associated with GMO foods, which he alleged are being heavily promoted by American businessman and philanthropist Bill Gates.
He urged lawmakers to act decisively to safeguard Nigerians’ health, protect the nation’s biodiversity, and preserve sovereignty.
“I stand here today as a patriot and a servant of the people, committed to building a healthier and more self-reliant Nigeria.
“I believe in the resilience of this National Assembly to make decisions that prioritize the welfare of Nigerians,” he said, adding that he was encouraged by the House’s willingness to oppose GMO foods.
Mr. Nwabufo criticized the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, for supporting the introduction of GMO foods, arguing that such a decision should not be made without consulting Nigerians and their representatives.
He called on the minister to prioritize scientific and evidence-based research in certified laboratories before endorsing GMO products.
He alleged that some Nigerian farmers have been misled into believing in the benefits of GMO seeds, with some saying, “It is better to eat GMO foods and die than not to see food to eat.”
Nwabufo highlighted that GMO products like “tella maize” have been banned in countries such as Russia, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, and parts of the UK due to health and environmental concerns.
The brand manager questioned the motives of Bill Gates and his foundation, accusing them of attempting to control Nigeria’s agriculture and healthcare sectors under the guise of investments.
“Bill Gates is a billionaire in dollars. Why does he think he can make more money investing in a country like Nigeria at this time if he does not have an ulterior motive?
He has spent millions of dollars pushing this agenda I personally tag population control,” Nwabufo said.
He further alleged that GMO seeds pose long-term threats to Nigeria’s food security and agricultural independence, claiming that once planted, such seeds cannot be replanted, forcing farmers to rely on external suppliers.
Mr. Nwabufo emphasized the importance of protecting Nigeria’s indigenous crops, which he said are a critical part of the country’s heritage.
He argued that GMOs could disrupt traditional farming practices, harm ecosystems, and compromise biodiversity.
“Our ancestors lived long, healthy lives relying on natural remedies, herbs, and clean water. While modern medicine has its place, we must ensure transparency and safety in any foreign interventions,” he said.
He called on the National Assembly to promote transparency in healthcare, invest in local agricultural solutions, and safeguard the nation’s biodiversity.
Mr. Nwabufo also expressed concerns about Gates’ involvement in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, citing instances where vaccines caused unintended harm.
He urged the government to modernize traditional medicinal practices and ensure that foreign interventions are subjected to rigorous safety checks.
“There have been cases where vaccines, such as the polio vaccine, caused unintended harm instead of saving lives.
“I am not advocating for a complete rejection of modern science, but I believe in preserving and modernizing our traditional practices to build a sustainable and healthy future for Nigeria,” he said.
Mr. Nwabufo concluded by urging the National Assembly to take immediate action to protect the nation from the potential dangers of GMOs. “Whoever controls our food controls our lives.
This danger is looming! I believe the National Assembly knows what to do with the information we have brought,” he said.
