The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has refunded a total of N5.3 billion to States’ Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Armed Forces, and accredited tour operators for services not properly rendered by Saudi authorities during the 2023 Hajj exercise.
A statement issued by NAHCON revealed that N4.47 billion was refunded to the state welfare boards, FCT, and Armed Forces, while N917.14 million was disbursed to 192 accredited tour companies that participated in the Hajj.
According to the commission, the refunds are to be distributed to the affected pilgrims, with ongoing reconciliations expected to cover other participating entities.
“This refund underscores NAHCON’s commitment, under the leadership of its Chairman/CEO, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, to uphold transparency and accountability in the management of Hajj operations,” the statement read.
The commission advised pilgrims from the 2023 Hajj to contact their respective State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards or tour operators to claim their entitlements. Each pilgrim is expected to receive a refund of N61,080.00.
NAHCON also urged intending pilgrims for the 2025 Hajj to promptly deposit their fares with their respective boards. This, it said, would ensure early transmission of funds to NAHCON and facilitate timely arrangements in compliance with Saudi Arabia’s guidelines.
In a bid to maintain transparency, the commission called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and other security agencies to monitor the refund process.
“This collaboration aims to ensure that all refunds are appropriately disbursed and reach the intended beneficiaries without any discrepancy,” the statement added.
NAHCON’s proactive approach is seen as a step toward rebuilding trust and ensuring better service delivery in future Hajj exercises.
