Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and stop Vice President Kashim Shettima from engaging in unwarranted verbal attacks against Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Conservative Party.
In a statement released on Sunday, Igboho expressed concern over Shettima’s criticism of Badenoch, who had recently commented on the widespread corruption in Nigeria while affirming her Yoruba identity and distancing herself from Northern Nigeria.
Igboho, who signed the statement personally, emphasized that Shettima should redirect his focus to tackling Nigeria’s critical issues rather than engaging in disputes.
He urged President Tinubu, who is also of Yoruba descent, to guide Shettima to prioritize his responsibilities as vice president.
“It is incumbent on President Bola Tinubu, who is also from the Yoruba ethnic nationality, to direct Shettima to face his duties as vice president rather than dissipate energy or engage in verbal war against Badenoch, who merely expressed her candid but true opinion on the pervasive corruption in Nigeria’s system,” Igboho said.
The activist also referenced the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting how critics of the Fulani ethnic group were often silenced or punished during Buhari’s tenure.
He compared this to his own experiences, recalling the deadly raid on his residence by security forces in 2021, which he believes was linked to his stance against the actions of Fulani herders during Buhari’s rule.
Turning to the current state of affairs in Nigeria, Igboho criticized the Federal Government for its failure to address major issues such as poverty, insecurity, and economic hardship.
He stated that the majority of Nigerians are suffering due to harsh economic policies and increasing insecurity, with the government seemingly unable to find solutions.
“The majority of Nigerians are currently being subjected to a harrowing experience, excruciating poverty due to harsh economic policies, and are bogged down by kidnapping and other forms of insecurity, but the Federal Government is still groping in the dark, finding solutions,” Igboho noted.
The activist questioned the backlash against Badenoch’s remarks, asserting that she had the right to voice her opinion and identity, especially regarding Nigeria’s struggles with corruption.
He also urged Shettima to focus on the national issues at hand instead of engaging in unnecessary disputes.
“Instead of deploying measures to mitigate the suffering of the masses and frontally tackle the nation’s challenges, Vice President Kashim Shettima is busy taking on Badenoch,” Igboho added.
Igboho concluded by urging President Tinubu to call Shettima to order and redirect his attention to his duties as vice president.
“It is high time President Bola Tinubu called Shettima to order now to desist from needless verbal attacks and face his duties as the vice president of the country,” Igboho stated.
