The Oyo State Police Command has released six suspects arrested in connection with the tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 40 children during a carnival in Ibadan, Oyo State, on December 18, 2024.
The stampede, which occurred at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, left the community in mourning, as families grappled with the sudden loss of young lives.
In a statement issued shortly after the incident, the Command’s spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the arrest of eight individuals linked to the tragedy.
Those initially detained included Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, an estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife; the school principal, Fasasi Abdullahi; Olowola Oluwa Tosin; Genesisi Christopher; Tanimowo Moruf; Anisoloja Olabode; Idowu Ibrahim; and Abiola Oluwatimileyin.
However, sources revealed that six of the suspects were released late Monday night from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Iyaganku, Ibadan.
Among those released are Olowola Oluwatosin, Genesisi Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisoloja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimileyin.
A witness at the CID confirmed the development, stating, “Six out of the people arrested have been released. The principal and others have not been released. We saw them when they released them.”
The circumstances surrounding the stampede remain under investigation, with public outcry demanding accountability and justice for the deceased children.
The police have yet to disclose further details regarding the ongoing investigation or the reasons behind the selective release of suspects.
The tragedy has sparked conversations about crowd control and event management in public spaces, with community leaders urging for stricter measures to prevent a recurrence.
