The Ogun State House of Assembly has approved the N1.054 trillion 2025 Appropriation Bill, with notable adjustments to bolster funding for critical sectors, just 20 days after Governor Dapo Abiodun presented the budget.
The bill’s passage on Tuesday followed comprehensive deliberations led by the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation.
The committee recommended changes to the recurrent expenditures of 21 agencies and capital expenditures of five others, reflecting a renewed focus on developmental priorities.
During the plenary session presided over by Speaker Oludaisi Elemide, the Assembly also adjusted the revenue targets of two agencies to align with the state’s financial goals.
The Appropriation Bill was adopted clause by clause in a Committee of the Whole session and subsequently read for the third time by Clerk of the House, Sakiru Adebakin.
One of the key highlights of the adjustments includes a significant increase in funding for security, education, and healthcare sectors.
The Ogun State Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, saw its budget raised from N765 million to N1.575 billion, signaling a stronger commitment to combating insecurity in the state.
Similarly, the Ministry of Health’s allocation was increased from N3.806 billion to N4.116 billion, while the State Teaching Service Commission’s budget climbed from N34.412 billion to N35.912 billion, emphasizing the administration’s focus on improving healthcare delivery and education infrastructure.
The Ministry of Community Development and Cooperatives also had its budget boosted from N1.780 billion to N2.499 billion, reflecting a N719 million increment aimed at empowering grassroots initiatives.
Other agencies received modest increments to address environmental, planning, and traffic management challenges.
The Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency’s budget increased from N252 million to N262 million, while the Ministry of Budget and Planning received an additional N427 million, raising its allocation to N1.902 billion.
The State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) also witnessed a slight increase, with its budget moving from N1.347 billion to N1.372 billion, aimed at improving traffic flow and safety.
The Majority Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, moved the motion for the third reading, which was seconded by Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye and unanimously supported by lawmakers.
The Speaker subsequently directed that the clean copy of the bill be forwarded to Governor Abiodun for assent.
The budget adjustments underscore the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring a balanced and responsive financial plan that addresses the state’s developmental priorities.
Governor Abiodun is expected to sign the bill into law in the coming days, paving the way for its implementation in the new fiscal year.
