Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision not to investigate military spending under former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as a reward for corruption.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, expressed his views during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday.
He argued that Tinubu’s decision contradicted the ongoing probe into the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under its embattled former governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Tinubu had, during a media chat on Monday, stated his unwillingness to revisit military expenditures under Buhari’s administration, emphasizing a forward-looking approach.
However, Sani maintained that addressing past mismanagement, especially in the security sector, was crucial for accountability and national progress.
“When you find yourself in this position, especially with a nation facing critical issues like ours, you still have to go backward and see how public funds that were looted have been recovered,” Sani said.
“This is what has been done with the probe of the CBN. But when the question of looting and mismanagement in the defense forces under Buhari was raised, the President’s response was to move forward, not backward. That’s contradictory.”
The former lawmaker insisted that evidence of corruption in military spending should compel the President to act, rather than dismissing past infractions.
“If you say that whatever happened in the past has gone, it is more like rewarding larceny,” Sani said. “What should have been said is that if evidence of corruption is provided, action would be taken to recover public funds.”
Sani also called on Nigerians to hold Tinubu accountable for his administration’s policies and the performance of his ministers. He noted that while the President had undertaken economic reforms, their execution had caused significant hardship for citizens.
“He should be held responsible for what has happened under his government. Economic reforms are never popular with citizens, and while Nigerians are suffering, it is important to assess his reforms in the context of their long-term impact,” he added.
