A 25-year-old man, Borokini Ayodeji, who is suspected of being a member of the Eiye confraternity, has confessed to stealing from a government general hospital in Akure, Ondo State, due to hunger and lack of family support.
Ayodeji, who was paraded by the Ondo State security outfit, Amotekun, revealed that he resorted to theft after feeling abandoned by his family and unable to establish his tailoring business due to poverty.
In an emotional interview, Ayodeji expressed remorse for his actions, admitting that hunger drove him to steal.
“I had no choice. I was hungry and couldn’t rely on anyone, so I took what I could find,” he said.
The security operation also saw the arrest of a 16-year-old secondary school student, who was paraded alongside Ayodeji for raping a 24-year-old neighbor at knifepoint. The teenager, whose identity was withheld, confessed to the crime, stating that it was unprovoked.
“I don’t know what came over me. I regret my actions,” the young suspect said, expressing deep remorse for his crime.
Amotekun’s State Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed that a total of 29 suspects were arrested, with seven more under interrogation for various offenses, including rape, burglary, and attempted murder.
Adeleye attributed the arrests to intensified patrols and intelligence gathering across the state, emphasizing the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety, especially during the festive season.
“Among those arrested was a notorious member of a vehicle and motorcycle theft syndicate, who dismantled stolen vehicles and sold the parts as scrap outside the state. We also apprehended a serial housebreaker who had been jailed twice in the past three years,” Adeleye revealed.
He assured the public that Amotekun would continue to work diligently to maintain peace and curb criminal activities, ensuring a safe environment for residents throughout the holiday period.
