The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has strongly refuted claims that it is imposing Aisha Maikudu as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
The clarification follows recent allegations surrounding the selection process for the university’s next leader.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Dr. Habib Yakoob, Acting Director of Information and University Relations, emphasized that Maikudu, who has served as Acting Vice-Chancellor for the past six months, is fully qualified for the role and has earned widespread praise for her performance during her tenure.
“Over the past six months, she has ably discharged her responsibilities as acting vice-chancellor.
“In fact, her remarkable overall accomplishment in the five months she has held forth has continued to attract widespread applause and commendation within the university and beyond,” Yakoob stated.
He further dismissed attempts to undermine her candidacy, calling them “baseless, unwarranted, and calculated to create unnecessary tension” within the university community.
The spokesperson reaffirmed the university’s commitment to a fair and merit-based selection process that adheres strictly to the University’s Act and relevant statutes.
“The University remains confident in the Council’s commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and merit-based selection process,” Yakoob continued.
“The process has been meticulously structured to ensure the emergence of the most competent and visionary leader to steer the institution toward greater achievements.”
Yakoob also addressed reports of a planned Senate meeting to resolve disputes over the selection criteria.
He clarified that the meeting was postponed to allow for alternative avenues of resolution and that no confrontation or coercion had occurred during the process, rejecting claims of protest by some professors.
He called on all stakeholders to allow the selection process to proceed without political interference, assuring that the university would uphold its mission of providing quality education and fostering innovation.
“The process will be concluded with the utmost integrity and in the best interests of the University,” he concluded.
