The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring its borders are not used as a base for attacks on neighboring countries.
He made the declaration on Thursday during a Christmas luncheon with troops of “Operation Fansan Yamma” in Sokoto State.
General Musa emphasized that no foreign military base would be allowed on Nigerian soil, stressing that the country has the capacity to address its security challenges internally.
“We have the capacity and capability to handle our security challenges,” he said. “What we can do is collaborate with other nations through training—sending our personnel abroad for training and welcoming theirs as well.”
Musa reassured neighboring countries, including Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Benin, and Togo, of Nigeria’s commitment to mutual security.
He warned that any criminal element using Nigerian soil to threaten these nations would face decisive action.
“Any criminal element using Nigerian soil to attack our neighbors is an enemy of Nigeria, and we will take decisive action,” he declared. “We are one with our neighbors and will ensure that such threats are neutralized.
The CDS called on Nigerians to see security as a collective responsibility, urging communities to reject individuals or groups exploiting religious or ethnic sentiments to sow discord.
“Many come pretending to be allies but later reveal their true motives,” Musa said, referencing the Lakurawa group, which he described as a significant threat.
He also warned communities harboring criminals to drive them out or face the consequences of military operations.
“We respect human rights but will take firm action against those aiding or abetting threats to national security,” he stated.
General Musa commended President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support for the Armed Forces and thanked Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu and the people of Sokoto for their cooperation with military operations.
“We reaffirm our loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and our commitment to defending our fatherland,” he said.
He also praised the troops for their bravery and professionalism, urging them to remain vigilant and united.
“You exemplify the finest traditions of the Armed Forces. Stay united and continue to make us proud,” he added.
Earlier, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Sokoto, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, highlighted the importance of the Christmas luncheon as an opportunity to celebrate the troops’ sacrifices and achievements while reinforcing their shared commitment to national security.
