The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed his role in the removal of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, citing concerns over a political plot against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Wike made this revelation while speaking as the special guest of honour at an end-of-year thanksgiving event organised by PDP stakeholders in Ahoada East and Ahoada West at Ukpata community in Ekpeye Kingdom, Rivers State.
The event was attended by notable party figures, including former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudum Nwuche; Chairman of Rivers State PDP Elders’ Council, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba; and lawmakers Solomon Bob, Victor Obuzor, and Dame Queen Williams.
Why Secondus Had to Go
Explaining his role in Secondus’ removal, Wike alleged that the former PDP chairman sought to impose his cousin, Tele Ikuru, as the Rivers State governor instead of Siminalayi Fubara, who eventually won the seat.
“I kicked out Secondus as PDP chairman when he wanted to make his cousin Tele Ikuru governor,” Wike stated.
“He has now become the governor’s friend while we, who stood by him, are now seen as enemies. To God be the glory.”
Wike also accused Secondus of hypocrisy, alleging that he only acts in his interest rather than the party’s collective goals.
War of Words with Omehia
In a scathing critique, Wike described former Rivers State governor Celestine Omehia as an “imbecile” for questioning his contributions to Rivers State as FCT minister.
“Omehia asked what I have done for Rivers State. That is why I say he is an imbecile,” Wike said. “As Minister of the FCT, I cannot use Abuja’s funds for Rivers projects. However, I have supported Rivers people in many ways.”
Wike listed his achievements as former Minister of Education, which included establishing a Faculty of Law at the University of Port Harcourt and providing grants to state institutions like Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic and Ignatius Ajuru University.
“I renovated Federal Government College, Port Harcourt, and Federal Government Girls College, Abuloma. These are things Omehia should be asking about, not talking nonsense,” he added.
Appointments for Rivers People
Wike further boasted of his influence in securing federal appointments for Rivers indigenes under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
“There is no governor in this state who has attracted more political appointments than I have,” he said. “By the grace of Mr President, Rivers people have benefited more than ever before.”
Criticism of Traditional Leaders
The former Rivers governor also criticized the integrity of some traditional rulers in Ekpeye land, alleging they lack the moral authority to lead.
“We must question the character of those occupying traditional stools in Ekpeye land. Leadership requires integrity,” Wike stated.
The thanksgiving event served as a platform for Wike to assert his ongoing commitment to Rivers people, even as he faces criticism from certain quarters within the state.
