The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), threatening a nationwide strike if outstanding bridging claims totaling N100 billion are not settled within the next seven days.
Despite previous negotiations and demands, IPMAN asserts that the NMDPRA has failed to honour its financial obligations.
Abdul Ibrahim, the Gombe depot chairman of IPMAN, highlighted the severe repercussions of the unpaid claims on northern depots such as Jos, Gusau, Suleja, Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, Yola, and Maiduguri.
These facilities, critical for fuel distribution, have faced operational challenges, including closures and workforce reductions due to financial strain.
“Our members are suffering immensely due to the NMDPRA’s non-payment of bridging claims, amounting to over N100 billion,” Ibrahim expressed during a press conference on Monday.
He further lamented that these debts, deducted at the point of product purchase, have led to dire consequences, including fatalities among their ranks.
The association accused the NMDPRA of reneging on promises made following negotiations involving prominent figures like the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. Despite assurances of payment within 40 days, the situation has persisted unresolved for months.
“If our demands are not met within the stipulated timeframe, IPMAN will collaborate with Petroleum Tankers Driver (PTD) and the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to take collective action,” Ibrahim warned.
This action could potentially exacerbate fuel scarcity nationwide as tanker operators may withdraw services.
IPMAN also raised concerns over alleged arbitrary levies imposed by the regulatory body, which they deem unconstitutional and detrimental to business operations.
They urged for the immediate suspension of these charges.
Ibrahim appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene promptly and prevent a looming crisis in the nation’s fuel supply chain.
