Mrs. Ekaette Akpabio, wife of Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, has taken legal action against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, following allegations of sexual harassment leveled against her husband.
The dispute arose after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that Senator Akpabio made unwelcome advances during a visit to his Uyo residence in December 2023, remarks made during an interview on Arise Television.
In response to these allegations, Mrs. Akpabio addressed the media on Friday, vehemently denying the accusations and defending her husband’s character as disciplined and affable.
She expressed deep concern over the emotional and psychological distress caused to her family by the allegations, labeling them as fabricated and damaging to their reputation.
Mrs. Akpabio has now initiated legal proceedings against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, filing a fundamental rights suit at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.
In her lawsuit, she asserts that the accusations have subjected her husband and their children to significant emotional trauma.
She seeks redress in the form of a restraining order against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, preventing further defamatory statements and preserving her family’s dignity.
The lawsuit further demands exemplary, punitive, aggravated, and general damages totaling N250 billion, emphasizing the severe harm inflicted upon their public standing and reputation.
Additionally, Mrs. Akpabio requests a public apology from Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, to be published in two national newspapers, as part of the restitution for the alleged defamation.
The legal action underscores Mrs. Akpabio’s commitment to safeguarding her family’s honor and reputation amidst what she perceives as baseless and damaging accusations.
The case is expected to proceed as both parties prepare their respective defenses and arguments before the court.
