A Federal High Court in Abuja has approved the 60-day detention of 10 suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) who were arrested in Osun State.
Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order following an ex-parte application by Y.I. Umar, counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS).
The suspects, identified as Adamu Abubakar (aka Abu Aisha), Babagana Bashuli, Muhammed Adam, Mustapha Abacha, Katuru Muhammed, Babakura Abacha, Muhammed Ciroma, Ali Gambo, Muhammed Umoru, and Muhammed Bundi, were detained pending further investigations.
In an affidavit presented by DSS official Yamuje Benue, the agency revealed that the suspects were apprehended on December 16, 2024, in the Ilesa East Local Government Area of Osun State.
They were allegedly undergoing training on the manufacture and detonation of explosives.
According to the DSS, preliminary investigations suggest the individuals are members of the late Abubakar Shekau-led Boko Haram faction who had relocated from Sambisa Forest to Osun State to establish an ISWAP cell. Intelligence also indicated that the suspects planned to create improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Justice Nwite ruled that the DSS had presented sufficient evidence to justify the extended detention of the suspects, setting the next court mention for March 3.
In a separate application, the DSS was also granted permission to detain two other suspects, Ayomide Akintunde and Nurudeen Adesiyan, for 60 days.
These individuals were reportedly linked to a Moroccan terrorist currently detained in Spain.
The DSS stated that intelligence revealed communications between the duo and the Moroccan terrorist via their Nigerian telephone numbers, which they had been using for over 10 months.
