The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has disclosed that it saved property valued at N1.94 trillion and responded to over 30,000 emergency calls in 2024.
The Controller-General of the service, Abdulganiyu Jaji, revealed this during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, highlighting the agency’s achievements and challenges over the past year.
According to Jaji, the service saved 30,890 lives from various incidents while recording property losses estimated at N67.1 billion.
However, more than 100 lives were tragically lost in fire-related disasters, including petrol tanker explosions and fires at markets, filling stations, and religious centres.
Jaji emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to public safety, particularly in preventing fire outbreaks and minimizing their devastating effects.
He also cautioned the public to exercise heightened vigilance during the harmattan season, a period characterized by low humidity and increased fire risks.
“Fire is a delicate and dynamic force that requires us to be more cautious and vigilant,” Jaji said. “At this point, I implore all operators of fuel stations, petrol tankers, gas refilling stations, gas cylinder consumers, and the general public to follow safety protocols and regulations.”
To improve fire prevention and response efforts, Jaji announced plans to deploy advanced technologies, including the National Fire Detection and Alarm System (NAFDAS) and the N-Alert fire alarm system.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the procurement of advanced firefighting equipment and the renovation of the National Fire Academy in Sheda, describing the measures as pivotal to enhancing the service’s operational capacity.
The Controller-General also lauded the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his strategic leadership and reforms under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said have yielded significant results.
Jaji further called on stakeholders to support the repeal and re-enactment of the Fire Service Act of 1963.
He argued that updating the legislation would greatly enhance the effectiveness of the Federal Fire Service in fulfilling its mandate.
