The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed reports suggesting a collapse of the national electricity grid, describing them as misleading and inaccurate.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the TCN clarified that the grid did not experience a collapse, contrary to widespread claims in the media.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) hereby states that the nation’s grid did not experience any collapse today, contrary to the widely published misinformation in the media,” Mbah said.
According to her, at about 1:41 p.m. on Saturday, the Osogbo-Ihovour transmission line tripped, triggering a subsequent trip of the Benin-Omotosho line.
She explained that the incident affected bulk electricity supply to Lagos and surrounding areas but did not result in a system-wide collapse.
“It is important to clarify that at about 1:00 p.m. today, just before the tripping, total generation on the grid was 4,335.63MW.
After the trippings, however, generation was 2,573.23MW, showing clearly that the grid did not experience a collapse,” she stated.
Mbah further noted that the tripping of transmission lines impacted power supply to major plants, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotoso, Geregu, and Paras.
However, she confirmed that power had been restored to all affected areas, except for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line, which is still undergoing repairs.
The TCN spokesperson also cautioned against the spread of false information, emphasizing its potential to undermine public confidence in the national grid.
“As TCN continues to work hard to put in place a robust transmission grid, despite prevailing challenges, it is imperative that we understand the negative impact of deliberately misinforming the public and the value of disseminating true and verifiable facts,” Mbah added.
