Barely a week after the murder of two police officers, suspected terrorists from the Lakurawa group have struck again, killing four people, including three staff members of a leading telecommunication company, Airtel, in Gumki village, Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The attack occurred at a construction site where the victims were reportedly installing a surveillance mast for the Nigeria Immigration Service.
The terrorists stormed the area, killing three Airtel staff members and one other individual whose identity remains unknown.
Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the victims’ identities. While a staff member at Sir Yahaya Specialist Hospital in Birnin Kebbi claimed the deceased were immigration personnel, the Kebbi State Police Command confirmed that three of the victims were Airtel employees.
The Public Relations Officer of the Kebbi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Abubakar, stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, swiftly mobilized law enforcement officers and the Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kebbi Command, CIS Muhammad Bashir Lawali, to the scene.
The victims’ bodies were evacuated to Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital.
SP Abubakar revealed that additional tactical teams had been deployed to the area to apprehend the perpetrators and curb further attacks.
He noted that the police commissioner held a meeting with local residents, urging them to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information to aid their operations.
The Lakurawa group has been implicated in a series of violent incidents in Kebbi State.
Just a week earlier, the same group reportedly killed two police officers and rustled over 200 cows in the region.
