The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man, Elela Monday, and his wife for allegedly killing their 14-year-old son, Tope Elela, over accusations of engaging in criminal activities.
The tragic incident occurred in Ajowa Akoko, Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilfred Afolabi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, revealing that the couple buried the boy in a shallow grave under a banana tree behind their house after the murder.
“On December 30, the police received an anonymous call reporting that one Elela Monday, residing in Ajowa Akoko, killed his 14-year-old son and buried him in a shallow grave.The suspect was subsequently arrested,” Afolabi said.
During interrogation, Elela admitted to the crime, explaining that his son’s repeated involvement in criminal activities had brought shame to the family.
“The boy was always involved in criminal activities and was embarrassing the family, so my wife and I decided to kill him to stop the disgrace,” Elela reportedly confessed.
In a related development, the police have apprehended 25 suspects in connection with a recent cult clash in Owo, Ondo State, which claimed four lives.
Providing an update, Afolabi said some of the arrested individuals have been directly linked to the violence. Among them is a 28-year-old man, Olamide Ogunseyila, who confessed to being a member of a cult group.
“We are still interrogating the remaining suspects to ascertain their involvement in the crisis, and efforts are ongoing to arrest Steven Dada, alias ‘Ogodo,’ and other individuals connected to these criminal activities,” the police commissioner added.
The Ondo State Police Command reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining law and order, urging residents to report suspicious activities promptly.
