Former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has asserted that Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, is fully eligible to contest for the position of Lagos State Governor.
In a statement posted online, Onochie emphasized that Nigerian laws do not disqualify individuals from holding governorship positions based on the political history of their parents.
She urged the public to adhere strictly to legal stipulations while debating the prospects of Seyi Tinubu succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
“LET US BE GUIDED BY THE LAW,” Onochie wrote. “To become a Governor in Nigeria, the law does not exclude those whose parents were governors or presidents.
“Let us be guided by the law when we argue about Lagos State succession. We cannot have a set of laws for Nigeria and a different set for Lagos.”
Highlighting the constitutional requirements for governorship, Onochie stated that candidates must meet the following criteria:
Be a Nigerian citizen by birth.
Be at least 35 years old.
Belong to a political party sponsoring their candidacy.
Possess a minimum of a secondary school certificate or its equivalent.
She also outlined disqualifications, which include holding dual citizenship, being declared of unsound mind, or having prior convictions for fraud or dishonesty, among others.
Onochie’s comments come amid growing speculation over Seyi Tinubu’s political future, fueled by recent remarks from the Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who described Seyi as highly qualified to lead Lagos State.
Meanwhile, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, dismissed rumours of his own governorship ambitions, reiterating his commitment to his current role.
