A member of the House of Representatives representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, has died at the age of 59.
The Deputy Chief Whip’s death, which occurred on January 15, 2025, following a brief illness, was announced by the spokesman for the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi.
Born on December 2, 1965, Onanuga, affectionately known as “Ijaya,” was a dedicated public servant and an ardent advocate for the welfare of her constituents.
She was first elected to the National Assembly in 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and had since left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.
During the 9th Assembly, she served as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she spearheaded several initiatives aimed at empowering women and advancing social welfare policies.
Her re-election in 2023 saw her rise to the position of Deputy Chief Whip in the 10th Assembly, where she earned widespread respect for her exceptional leadership and commitment to legislative discipline.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives and her colleagues have described Onanuga as a visionary leader whose intellect, humility, and dedication to excellence left a lasting impact on both her colleagues and constituents.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, associates, and the Government and People of Ogun State, particularly the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency,” the House said in a statement.
“Her life was devoted to improving the lives of Nigerians, especially her constituents, and her legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire future generations.”
Funeral arrangements are to be announced by the family.
Onanuga’s passing marks the end of an era for her constituents and the National Assembly, where her contributions to the legislative process will be fondly remembered. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
