The recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, faces an imminent showdown with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the anti-graft agency prepares to interrogate him over alleged embezzlement of N43.5 billion.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Obasa, who is currently in the United States, would be detained and questioned immediately upon his return to Nigeria.
It was further gathered that Investigators have reportedly compiled a robust case file that includes allegations of lavish expenditures on luxury backup vehicles, which ultimately triggered his impeachment by state legislators on Monday.
Obada lost his seat when the legislators moved swiftly to impeach him, replacing him with Mojisola Meranda, who has the backing of the Governing Advisory Council.
PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that adding to his woes, the former speaker appears to have lost the confidence of President Bola Tinubu.
Sources close to Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, revealed that Obasa’s attempts to seek political support were ignored, signaling a deliberate isolation from the corridors of power.
“He’s now completely on his own,” a source familiar with the developments stated. “No one is willing to shield him from the consequences of his actions.”
Unlike previous investigations into Obasa — including a 2020 case involving N1.1 billion spent in one week — the EFCC insists there will be no escape this time.
An official, who requested anonymity, disclosed that the agency’s case is airtight and free from political interference.
“The evidence is overwhelming. He will have to answer for these allegations and prove his innocence to our investigators,” the source said.
The EFCC has declined to comment publicly on its strategy but hinted at a prompt arrest upon Obasa’s arrival in the country.
