Some of us unknowingly embarrass our friends, colleagues, family members and associates by asking them a taboo question during greetings and exchange of pleasantries by saying “How was your night?”
Among the native speakers of English, that question simply implies “How your performance on the bed last night?” We are lucky that both parties involved in such greetings do not know the meaning of what we are saying.
Instead of embarrassing them, why don’t you just say “ Did you sleep well?” or “Did you have a good night’s rest!” It is high time we stopped disgracing our friends and colleagues in the name of greeting. Once again, you are welcome to my English Language Classroom this week.
