…Says Project Funded With Personal Resources
The lawmaker representing Abeokuta South Constituency 1 in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Lukmon Atobatele, on Friday commissioned the newly constructed Somorin Street Road in the Oke Abetu area of Abeokuta, the state capital.
At the event, which drew community leaders and residents, Atobatele also empowered 50 constituents with cash incentives to support their businesses, underscoring his commitment to grassroots development.
Speaking to journalists, the lawmaker emphasized the need for urgent attention to inner roads across Ogun State, noting their significant impact on community life.
“Government should keep doing things like this and emulate what I am doing. The majority of the major roads are okay, but we have issues with the inner roads,” he said.
Atobatele urged other stakeholders and well-meaning individuals to step up and address the infrastructural gaps affecting communities, stressing that collective efforts are essential in alleviating the hardship faced by Nigerians.
“If others choose to do street roads too, it would benefit the people. Well-meaning individuals should stop shying away from the truth. If you know you have the capacity to help the people, you should do so.
“Things are not easy for Nigerians, and we shouldn’t always wait for the government – we can help ourselves,” he stated.
The lawmaker clarified that the road project was funded entirely with his personal resources, dispelling speculation that it was a constituency project.
“The project is part of my commitment to assist the community, particularly in accessing the only hospital serving this area and its environs,” he explained.
Atobatele appealed to other stakeholders to join hands in nation-building, emphasizing that the government alone cannot shoulder the burden of addressing citizens’ needs.
Echoing the lawmaker’s sentiments, the CEO of the community hospital, Dr. Fadeyi Olatunbosun, highlighted the importance of completing the remaining portion of the road, which was initially constructed under a World Bank project but left unfinished.
“The other side of the road was constructed during the World Bank project but stopped midway. I appeal to the government to complete the remaining 300 meters to ensure easy access to the hospital,” Olatunbosun said.
Residents of the area commended Atobatele’s intervention, describing the road project as a welcome development that would enhance mobility and improve their quality of life.
