The United Kingdom’s Home Office has revoked the visas of several Nigerian nurses under investigation for alleged examination malpractice, ordering them to leave the country, Nursing Times has reported.
The affected nurses, who are still awaiting the outcomes of their appeals, have reportedly received letters directing them to depart the UK starting next week.
The deportation directive follows an ongoing probe by the UK’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) into suspected irregularities at the Yunnik Technologies Test Centre in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The investigation, which began in 2023, was triggered after the NMC detected “anomalous data” in the computer-based test (CBT) required for foreign-trained nurses seeking UK registration.
The CBT, typically taken in applicants’ home countries, is a critical component of the UK’s nursing qualification process.
Following the probe, the NMC declared that 48 registered nurses and 669 applicants might have fraudulently obtained their test results at the Yunnik centre.
Consequently, the regulatory body ruled all test results from the centre as invalid.
The affected individuals were to have their cases reviewed by an independent panel to determine if they had engaged in fraudulent practices.
However, in February 2025, about 50 of them issued a pre-action protocol letter to the NMC, alleging that their hearings were “deliberately” delayed.
They also urged the NMC to collaborate with the Home Office to allow them to remain in the UK while their appeals were pending.
Despite their pleas, the Home Office has proceeded with revoking their visas, raising concerns over due process and the potential impact on their careers.
