The Lagos State Government has shut down Smiley Kids Montessori School, located at Heritage Place Estate in Sangotedo, following the tragic death of a two-year-old pupil in the school’s swimming pool.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by Kayode Sutton, the Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the school was closed on Friday to enable a thorough investigation into the incident.
“The government is deeply pained by the loss of this young child and extends heartfelt condolences to the family,” Sutton said.
He further disclosed that the school proprietor, the head of the nursery section, the pupil’s teacher, the pool instructor, and two caregivers are currently being interrogated by the police.
The state government has also reiterated its commitment to ensuring safety in schools and has urged school owners and caregivers to adhere strictly to safety protocols to prevent such tragedies.
“The Lagos State Government appeals to all stakeholders to prioritize the safety and well-being of pupils in their care.
This incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of compliance with safety regulations,” Sutton added.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to take further steps based on its outcome.
The closure of Smiley Kids Montessori School underscores the state’s zero-tolerance approach to negligence in educational institutions, especially where the safety of children is concerned.
